Polio Vaccination Campaign to Resume in Northern GazaThe third phase of the polio vaccination campaign begin Sunday, 11/3/24 in part of the northern Gaza Strip after being postponed from 23 October 2024 due to lack of access and assured, comprehensive humanitarian pauses, intense bombardment, and mass evacuation orders. These conditions made it impossible for families to safely bring their children for vaccination and to organize campaign activities.

Diaper DriveSouth Austin Rotary Club gathered diapers, wipes and other paper products for the Manchaca United Methodist Church's Food Pantry during the month of October. Although this Food Pantry is supported by the Austin Diaper Bank, there is never enough to meet the demand for these supplies.

Operation VacationThe Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen provided an R&R weekend for a military couple from Fort Cavazos. They received gift cards, snacks and gifts to let them know we appreciate their service.

DAP GrantThe Rotary Club of Cedar Park - Leander had the honor to present a check to Reed Elementary School’s PTA. Books will be purchased by the school’s librarian and will be presented by Rotary Club members to the students at the school later this year. Flatonia Donates Supplies to Flatonia ElementaryWhile preparing for the start of school can be exciting for students, it can also be a financial burden on the families when asked to bring in multiple paper products and school supplies. On Thursday, 17 October 2024, addressing the need for school paper supplies to be donated by parents, the Flatonia Rotary Club delivered three cases (60 rolls) of paper towels and eighty 1” binders to Principal Laura Kutac at the Flatonia Elementary School, to offset the burden of school families having to supply them.

Environment Minute - Plant a Tree for the EnvironmentExperts have long pointed to trees as one of the most scalable and affordable nature-based solutions to battling climate change. Trees pull carbon from the air, clean our water, and reduce dangerously high temperatures, reduce air pollution, improve soil quality and are a food for birds and wildlife.

ScholarshipRotary E Club of Central Texas gave a scholarship to Texas State nursing student Gracie Motschman from the Mark Richardson Memorial fund with special thanks to Betty Richardson. This scholarship was greatly appreciated for her final year of nursing school.

Baffin Bay Water ProjectOn October 19, members of the Marble Falls Rotary Club and the Hill Country Passport Club helped with a global grant project in Sarita, TX. The project involved planting plants in retention pond of the Sarita Elementary School.

$25,000 Raised for Two Local Nonprofits!On October 17, 2024, Rotary Club of Temple presented donation checks to Family Promise of Bell County and Our Lady of the Angels Maternity Shelter (OLAMS) from the proceeds of its yearly fundraising event, The Killer Dueling Pianos that was held on July 11, 2024. This year the total amount raised for the nonprofits was $25,000! The proceeds were split in half and each nonprofit received a check for $12,500!

Rescue for Columbian TeachersWhen school started at Pecan Springs, there were two new teachers who came all the way from Columbia, Africa but arrived with nothing to start their year of teaching except an empty apartment and a portable blowup mattress. The staff at the school spread the word to my Rotary club, the Rotary Club of Austin who sponsors many of the events and support for that school and we spread the word through our members about what the teachers needed to make their empty apartment a home.

Caldwell Supports “Day of Giving” with Brazos Valley GivesOur Rotary Club helped raise funds during the Day of Giving on October 15th at the Caldwell Civic Center in partnership with Brazos Valley Gives. Brazos Valley Gives brings the region together as one community raising money and awareness for our local nonprofits during the 18-hour online giving challenge. BVG inspires people to give generously to nonprofits making our region stronger and creating a thriving community for all!

Successful Pints for Polio!On October 3, Bastrop County Club partnered with Frost Bank, Smithville Brewing Company, and several individual Rotarian sponsors to host the most successful “Pints” event in its history! Souvenir beer glasses, free “fills,” and great raffle items contributed to a fun and financially fruitful evening. Smithville Brewery is a local pub, so we had many non-Rotarian folks that also got an education about the need to End Polio Now!

Friendships Strengthen Early Act First KnightEAFK was introduced to the district in 2008, when my husband Ronney Reynolds was the incoming district governor. We were invited by one of our incoming DG classmates to hear about an incredible new character-building program that was being featured at the San Antonio district conference at a ranch. We agreed to go since it was about education and children and I had been a teacher so it sparked my interest. We had no idea that night we would meet a real live knight in shining armor!

Pack Pals with Interact ClubRockdale Rotary recently locked arms with Rockdale High School Interact Club to fill bags with nonperishable food items for a program called Pack Pals. Sixteen giant totes were filled with bags that will be distributed to students, not only in Rockdale, but also in Thorndale, Milano and Gause.

Books for Me Pecan SpringsToday was a fun day for Rotarians because they got to make the students at Pecan Springs -Austin smile when they got to pick out a “clever” book during Books for Me and write their name in it. That’s when they realized they never had to return their book to school- it truly belonged to them once they wrote their name in it.

Helping NeighborsMembers of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, TX came together on September 14, 2024, for a morning of work and fellowship. Rotarians built an accessibility ramp for a neighbor in Coupland, TX. The ramp build project helps to give homebound and disabled individuals, along with their caregivers, more independence within their own home.

Blessing Children In Williamson CountyOn September 21, 2024, Rotarian LeAnn Carr from the Rotary Club of Georgetown, TX participated in a bed build for the Georgetown Chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace. Sleep In Heavenly Peace is a non-profit organization that builds and delivers beds to children in Williamson County who are in need of a bed.

Northwest Austin Rotarians Crafting Blankets for Community Blanket DriveNorthwest Austin Rotary Club made blankets for the annual Coat and Blanket drive in partnership with Hill Country Community Ministries. Donations are accepted through Nov 5. On Week 1, they have 10 new blankets.

The BBQ Thing & Cook OffOn September 20th and 21st, the Rotary Club of Round Rock held their annual fundraiser called The BBQ Cook Off & The BBQ Thing in Round Rock, TX. We had 21 cook off teams participate in the state championship, sanctioned event in coordination with the Lone Star BBQ Society.

Adopt-A-School: Emile ElementaryThe Bastrop Club delivered its first load of "loot" to the Principal and Vice-principal at Emile Elementary earlier in September. The treasure includes "extras," like snacks and drinks for the Teachers' Lounge, but also essentials, such as school necessities, like pens, markers, paper, and notepads, that might otherwise have to be bought by the teachers themselves.

Caldwell Rotarians Assist With Back to School BashOur club participated in the annual Back to School Blast with the Burleson County - Texas A&M Agrilife Extension! We gave away 300+boxes of facial tissue to the students of Burleson county along with the 60+ community groups, churches and businesses.

Operation Vacation Ft. CavazosThe Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen hosted a military family from Ft. Cavazos this weekend through Operation Vacation. Sgt. Jose Castellon and his family had a complimentary weekend at the Austin Hilton Garden Inn.

Bridge of HopeThe Killeen Rotary Club recently completed the construction of a paved bridge at the Killeen Municipal Court Garden and held a Ceremonial Ribbon Cutting on August 24, 2024. The Bell County Master Gardeners assist each Saturday with maintaining the community garden and many times have to drive through mud to get to the worksite.

Breath of Life DonationsIn July, as part of Rotary's Maternal and Child Health month, our sunshine basket funds were collected for Breath of Life - Sarah's House, a local maternity home, that helps pregnant women. Their founder, Jeannine Floores, was our speaker on August 7th. |

Austin University Area Celebrates Fundraising MilestoneThis year marks the 20th year of the Rotary Club of Austin University Area’s primary fundraiser “Park with a Heart”, which has raised upwards of $1,000,000 for local charities since it began. Initiated by club member Dr. Fred Hanson, an Austin OB/GYN specialist, club members work to provide designated parking lots during UT football games.

August Environment Minute - Reduce Your WasteCheck your refrigerator before you shop and only buy what you will eat. If food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane. Methane is the second most abundant greenhouse gas, after carbon dioxide. Though it breaks down more quickly, methane traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide, making it a major contributor to climate change. Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is emitted from landfills, resulting from the decaying of organic waste over time under anaerobic conditions.

Family Elder Care Summer Fan DriveAustin NxNE took the month of May to raise money during our monthly meetings. The club raised $1100 at the meetings plus $231 via our link and also donated 8 fans. UPDATE: District 5870 Cozumel Water DAP ProjectGreat news! The 2022-23 District 5870 Cozumel Water DAP Project is becoming a reality and it is just in time for the rainy season! This is our first ever District DAP grant project being performed internationally … In line with The Rotary Foundation’s 3rd Area of Focus: Water & Sanitation. On an island where most residents do not have easy access to drinkable water and must purchase drinkable water, this project will provide clean drinkable water to 1200 students + teachers. |

EAFK Stage Set ProjectSouth Austin Rotary Club with some help from the Southwest Austin Rotary Club built a castle stage set for Eden Park Academy located in south Austin. Designing, purchasing materials and constructing theater flats were all done ahead of time and on Thursday, July 18th the two clubs came together at the school and made the dreams a reality.

Joe Bolash, GM of the hotel greeted SSG Ivann Icao, his wife and their children and escorted them to their room for a two nite complimentary stay with breakfast each morning, a fantastic amenity in their room upon arrival and free parking in the heart of downtown Austin.

Caldwell Holds Annual Law Enforcement BanquetFor the 22nd year, the Rotarians of Caldwell, Texas, have worked together to create an event to honor and recognize the four law enforcement agencies of Burleson County. June Environment Minute - Think Before You PrintReducing printing can help the environment by reducing the impact of paper, ink, and toner on the environment. The production of one ton of paper can require 12 to 24 trees, which creates greenhouse gas emissions and can lead to deforestation. Paper production also uses a lot of water, and some chemicals used in the process can contaminate water supplies and harm aquatic life.

Making Waves with Mobile Loaves and FishesOn the first Monday in May, the Rotary Club of Westlake made over 135 sandwiches, packed a truck full of food, drinks, clothing items, and toiletries, and drove the truck to deliver them to Austin’s homeless population. Rotary E-Club Provides Playground Equipment for ChildrenRotary E-Club of Central Texas has partnered with the non-profit, Libraries of Love, to provide playground equipment for a primary school in Uganda. This school has children who are blind as well as those with sight. They also have many orphans and needy children. The children are thrilled with their new playground. |

The Rotary Club of Round Rock - The BBQ ThingThe Rotary Club of Round Rock recently held its first in-person fundraiser since Covid shut the world down, and it was a roaring success! New Table Tennis Opens at Mertz Tennis CenterThe City of Corsicana has added another athletic an entertainment to city parks, with the opening of a new-state-of-the-art table tennis facility at the Mertz Tennis Center. The project was underwritten by the Corsicana Rotary Club and their partner, Oncor, which funded $9,367 to create the concrete slab and provide a professional outdoor ping-pong table, 20 table tennis paddles and 200 balls.
