Nearly 150 guests and members of The Rotary Club of Georgetown TX filled McKinney Hall at Georgetown’s First United Methodist Church to celebrate the Club’s 60th Anniversary of service to the community.
Club President Cathleen Phelps recognized many honored guests, including FUMC Volunteer Service league member Nell Benold, who shared stories from the days when the Club was first established in 1962. The Georgetown Club was chartered by the Rotary Club of Taylor, and their current President Tia Stone delivered greetings. Rotary District Governor Shannon Coleman delivered a proclamation from the current President of Rotary International, Jennifer Jones.
Former Rotarian and Georgetown Mayor Josh Schroeder, along with current Rotarian and City Councilman Ron Garland, delivered a proclamation by the Georgetown City Council in honor of the Club’s anniversary, and Georgetown ISD with whom the Club has had a deep and lengthy relationship sent greetings. Southwestern University President Laura Shanders Trombley, herself a Rotarian, spoke to the audience about the extensive working relationship between the Club and SU. Finally, a representative from the Rotary Club of Ciudad Victoria in Mexico, with whom the Georgetown TX Rotarians have done numerous cross-border service projects both here as well as in Ciudad Victoria, spoke to the guests, lauding the spirit of international collaboration and service to others.
Chartered on February 28, 1962 by the Rotary Club of Taylor TX the Georgetown Club started with twenty-five members, and today counts 132 as members. Past Presidents of the Georgetown Club, including Judge Billy Ray Stubblefield (1990-1991) shared insights into their yearly activities and accomplishments, and the audience was given insight by DRFCC and PDG Jerry Chapman into the nearly $750k raised by the Georgetown Rotary Club over the years for the benefit of The Rotary Foundation.
Since inception, the Club has spawned three additional clubs: Round Rock in 1983, Georgetown Sunrise in 1996, and Georgetown Sun City in 1997 co-sponsored with Georgetown Sunrise. From November 5-12 the Rotary Club of Georgetown TX will host the Sixth Annual Field of Honor® tribute to veterans and first responders. The Multi-day event is free and open to the public 24x7 in San Gabriel Park in Georgetown. New this year is a special tribute to the first responders during the 9/11 tragedy, presented by those who were actually on-site in the aftermath.
