Rotary District 5870 Central Texas funded the Backpack Friends Service Project with $28,000 through a Rotary Foundation District Grant to provide meals to school age children & teens who suffer from weekend hunger, due to food insecurity. 1100 Rotarians from 47 clubs provided the labor to pack 6,400 bags to be distributed in schools within the district. It was wonderful recently to see the Rotary float in the Rose Bowl parade to begin this new year; the commentators were very kind to speak of the fantastic work of Rotary around the world. As 2023 is upon us, we need to ask, “Is our club friendly and welcoming?”
Rotary International President-elect R. Gordon R. McInally announced his theme for the 2023-24 Rotary year, “Create Hope in the World”. He explained that the goal is to restore hope to help the world heal from destructive conflicts and to help achieve lasting change. He emphasized the need for peace and continuity, including work to empower women and work toward diversity, equity, and inclusion, while not neglecting our mission to end polio.

Five members of the South Austin Rotary Club worked a three hour shift at the SAFE Alliance warehouse on Saturday, January 14,2023. We sorted, packaged, and organized donations and made a substantial impact in their warehouse. We like to think we partnered with them to help stop abuse and provide a safe place for the abused. We left feeling fulfilled and happy to have helped!

The Rotary Club of Temple brought a new twist to their weekly lunch on January 19th. Instead of meeting as normal, the club broke up into 8 Clusters to meet in small groups at member's place of business. This gave 8 members the opportunity to show off their location and share about their company. Even more allowed everyone to visit about their experience with Rotary and how better they could serve in the organization.
