APRIL 2019 EDITION
News Around The District
DG Jerry Chapman's April Message
My parents taught me if I take on a task to do it the best of my ability. No more than one’s best can be expected. As a young engineering manager, I found myself visiting with a senior executive. When I entered his office, he was in a conversation in Spanish telling and employee the next time he “pulled stunt like that”, he would be unemployed. The stage was set for an interesting conversation and lesson that has stayed with me. The executive spun around in his chair and asked, “Chapman, what have you been doing”.  My response, “I’ve been busy”.  Promptly he responded, “I don’t pay you to be busy, I pay you accomplish goals”.

Selection of District Governor Designee for 2021-2022 Rotary Year
It is my distinct honor and privilege to formally announce that Beverly Luedke of the Rotary Club of Temple South has been selected by the District Nominating Committee to serve as our Governor for Rotary Year 2021-2022.  Beverly is a great Rotarian and good friend who I know to be exceptionally well prepared for the job!  Please join me in congratulating  Beverly on her selection as our 107th District Governor.
Time to Celebrate!
It’s time to celebrate and have fun. Join me May 3rd at the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio for a fun weekend of events and fellowship with your Rotary family. We will enjoy a Mexican buffet entertained by a Mariachi band Friday evening to kick off the weekend. Following dinner, you are encouraged to join me in a RISE Against Hunger district service project.  In two hours, we will package over 10,000 food packages that will be shipped to areas where hunger is a daily reality.

The Flamingos of Change
On February 2, 2019, 404 Rotarians and friends gathered for dinner at the Austin Hilton to celebrate the District’s support to The Rotary Foundation in Calendar Year 2018. The attendees experienced an uncommon treat, as Rotary International President Barry Rassin served as the guest speaker; it is not every day that the RI President visits an event in one of Rotary’s 539 individual Districts!

President Rassin shared amazing stories about our progress towards polio eradication, the importance of the Rotary Peace Fellows program, how work within our Areas of Focus helps bring peace to the world, and how Rotary was the first organization to respond to the earthquake in Haiti. He challenged us, as Rotarians, to think bigger - to find even more ways to have impact on our communities and the world.

Austin Awards Scholarships
The Rotary Club of Austin will be interviewing and awarding thousands of dollars to senior high school students across the area this month.  About 50 Rotarian members work with high school counselors to identify those students who have stellar grades, have volunteered to help others, have excellent writing skills and, whom without our support, would likely not be financially enabled to attend college.
