My name is Christine Kempff and I am your new District Foundation chair. I have spent the last two months getting trained and up to speed on all things 5870 and Foundation, but it is a big job! The good news is I have a great Foundation team and mentor. We have a mix of brand new and established committee members that are also here to help Clubs. Personally, I have served at the District in various positions for 5 years and have seen first hand the great work our District and the Foundation are doing in our community and around the world.
September is Basic Education and Literacy Month and 5870 is proud to have many local projects and Global Grant Projects both past and present in this area. In 2014, the Rotary Club of Pflugerville partnered with Libraires of Love under a Global Grant to provide five new libraries. Six other clubs soon joined the grant, headed by the Pflugerville Club President Chelsea Robertson and Past President, Matt Sparkman. Those clubs included Marble Falls Daybreak Club, Georgetown Sunrise Club, Rotary Club of Burnet, Northwest Austin Rotary, Georgetown Rotary Club. In Uganda, Mbale Rotary served as the partner club. The Global Grant was for $28,899.89.
Every wanted to get involved in a Global Grant as a Club but not ready to complete a project on your own? Many clubs are looking for partners for their projects. The Rotary Club of Austin is looking for partners for their Global Grant water project in Panama. For as little as $100 your club can become a partner on this life saving project. District 5870 has a unique method to help you become an initial (first-time) Paul Harris Fellow. Over the past six years, 1,207 Rotarians in 76 different clubs have taken advantage of this program, resulting in 619 PHFs. We hope to be able to help you, too.
The Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust (the “Trust”) will generally match contributions of new cash made during the current Rotary year to the Annual Fund-SHARE on a 1-to-1 basis in amounts of $100 to $500 for any active Rotarian in District 5870 who is not yet a first time Paul Harris Fellow.
For a number of years, the Jerry Johnson Trust has been asked if there is any way that the Trust can match contributions made by Rotarians who are already a Paul Harris Fellow. While doing that falls outside of the scope of Jerry’s trust, we heard you loud and clear. So, for a limited time starting on August 1, 2018, the Trustees will do the following:
Following our Foundation’s record-breaking centennial year in RY 2016-17 – during which your district reached several new highs in giving and participation – we have struggled to maintain our momentum this year. Annual Fund giving is down 19.5% (-$121,367). PolioPlus giving, however, is up 4.6% ($3,100). We are not alone in this decline. Twenty of the 22 districts that comprise Rotary Zones 27 and 21b (we are in 21b) are down this year. Yes, we have company, but the decline is nevertheless worrisome. We can, and must, do better.
